Guns of Yesterday: The Musket

A musket is a muzzle-loaded, smooth bore long gun, which is intended to be fired from the shoulder.

Usually, the musket is thought to be the weapon that replaced the arquebus (later to be discussed), and was in turn replaced by the rifle.

The term “musket” has applied to a range of different weapons, starting with a long, heavy weapon with a matchlock or wheel lock and loose powder fired with the gun barrel resting on a stand, and ending with a lighter weapon with rifling and percussion caps, affixed with a bayonet.

A soldier primarily armed with a musket had the designation musketman or musketeer. Initially, 16th Century troops armed with a heavy version.

Typical musket calibres ranged from 0.5 inches (13 mm) to 0.8 inches (20 mm). A typical smooth bore musket firing at a single target was only accurate to about 50 yards (46 m) to 70 yards (64 m).

Military Firearms and Alike

Well some of us wondering when a gun or a firearm determined as its category.

A Military firearms is first on my list.

Military firearm is being a classification for all those long guns. Under this classification are the Shot guns and the raging guns or the machine guns, rifles or the ranging guns and sub-machine guns.

All of this has a variety of long sizes and measurements ranging from 870-900mm as of that of the AK47 of Russia or formerly the Soviet Union.

While its nearest competitor the M4 Carbine of the United States has a measurement of 838mm or 33 in with an extended stock.

This two has a firing capacity of 600 rounds per minute (AK 47), 700-950 rounds per minute (M4 Carbine). Thus they are legitimate in the category of an assault rifle and at the same time correct for being into a military type of firearms. Because this two had gone to its wars. The M4 Carbine was in use until now in Iraq, while the AK47 still in use other parts of the world's combatants circulation be it legally or illegally.

Many more to come

Guns Specs?

When we say "gun specs" what will come immediately on your mind?

Is it the size, measurement? What? Specifically its the everything that contributes to the gun's technology and power.

Gun's technology and power...Every little thing that composes the whole gun itself is the gun's specs.

Now what is specs in general...Specification to others, well it is also right but the true meaning of specification is this "A specification is an explicit set of requirements to be satisfied by a material, product, or service." Thanks wiki.

Now when we say...32 caliber, 9mm, .38 caliber, 50 caliber. What is the number determining to?

It is not the bullet measurement but indeed its the whole of the barrel measured by its diameter.

Hope this can enlighten some people has this questions.

Guns Category Explained

Guns do have some categories other than the below given types of guns.

There are handguns, ranging guns, raging guns, and the pump action guns.

Here are some examples for each.

1. Hand Guns: A handgun is a firearm designed to be held and operated by one hand, with the other hand optionally supporting the shooting hand. This characteristic differentiates handguns as a general class of firearms from their larger counterparts the rifle and the shot guns.

2. Raging Guns or Machine Guns: A machine gun is a fully automatic mounted or portable firearm, usually designed to fire rifle cartridges in quick succession from an ammunition belt or large-capacity magazine, typically at a rate of several hundred rounds per minute.

3. Ranging Guns: A rifle is a firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder, with a barrel that has a helical groove or pattern of grooves ("rifling") cut into the barrel walls.

4. Pump Action Guns or Shot Guns: A shotgun (also known as a scattergun[1]) is a firearm that is usually designed to be fired from the shoulder, which uses the energy of a fixed shell to fire a number of small spherical pellets called shot, or a solid projectile called a slug.

Meaning of a GUN

My first offering to you...the meaning of a gun.

There are only 4 out of 10 people around the globe knows the exact meaning of gun. 3 of them considers it as a weapon and only 1 as evil.

Evil? well let us just study the guns' terminology...In modern parlance, a gun is a projectile weapon using a hollow, tubular barrel with a closed end—the breech—as the means for directing the projectile as well as other purposes—an expansion chamber for propellant, stabilizing the projectile's trajectory, aiming, etc.—and assumes a generally flat trajectory for the projectile.

The use of gun is interchangeable with cannon as it was borrowed from the 15th century French language.

All evil that I can see here is the interchangeable terms from the old French language....Evil in a sense that it corrupts the people's mind in thinking what is the correct term to be used in this premise..."May I borrow your (Cannon) instead of gun...."

Anyway...guns for me is not evil at all...it is the people who carries such mindset thinking that a gun is work of evil.

GUNS....Almighty

Well guns are all mighty indeed. They can be a source of power. A weapon that can manipulate people due to fear. But I think let us not treat this as evil but as our friend. But in military it is considered as a wife...a lifetime partner...

But even though how big or small they are it cannot kill people. They are only things in our life that offers great opportunities. Opportunity to excel in a career (pistol shooting), enjoy leisure (hunting, soft air competition), and trade.

Here we can make some studies regarding guns of our time and I can offer some overviews on guns.
